ASB provided new homes for 177 internally displaced persons and refugees

Smederevo, 14. May 2015 – H.E. Ambassador Michael Davenport, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia together with  the Mayor of Smederevo, Ms Jasna Avramovic, Mr Elmir Bojadzic, ASB regional director and Ms. Svetlana Velimirovic, Deputy Commissioner for Refugees of the Republic of Serbia, visited once biggest Collective Centre in the Balkans “ORA Sartid” and newly constructed houses in Mala Krsna settlement, built under the project implemented by ASB.

Ambassador Davenport visited some of the most vulnerable families who had been living in Collective Center “ORA Sartid” for over 15 years before they moved in new homes in Mala Krsna  and Kovacicevo settlements. For construction of 45 prefabricated houses for IDPs refugee families from this CC, under the ASB project, approximately 570.000 Euros were allocated.

Collective Center “Ora Sartid” Radinac, was opened in 1995, after the arm conflicts in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. During the period 1999-2000, with around 1300 internally displaced persons and refugees, it was the biggest collective centre, not only in Serbia, but also in the Balkan region and ex SFRY. The ASB project was finished on May 1st, 2015 and with the implementation of this project CC “ORA Sartid” is finally closed due the fact that all the CC residents were provided with the housing solutions.

The project “Supporting the closure of Collective Centers in Serbia through the provision of durable housing solutions for IDPs, refugees and returnees” implemented by ASB and funded by the EU in the total value of 1.044,000 million Euros provided durable housing solutions for the total of 177 beneficiaries: 138 beneficiaries in Smederevo, 28 in Vranje and 11 in Gadžin Han. Under the project 64 new pre-fabricated houses were constructed and equipped with new furniture and home appliances. In the City of Smederevo, 42 houses were constructed on two locations provided by the local authorities,  “Mala Krsna” settlement, with 28 houses and other in “Kovačicevo” settlement, with 14 houses. Additionally, three prefabricated houses were constructed on private building plots.
