Director of ASB Serbia Mr. Gordan Velev, was awarded the honorary title of Meritorious citizen of Dimitrovgrad for his and ASB’s dedication, direct assistance and significant funds allocated to help this municipality in dealing with the unprecedented refugee flows over the past year. Mr. Velev was handed over the medal of the municipality by the Mayor who praised his efforts, citing that refugee crisis brought unexpected burden to all local public services and that, without help provided by ASB, Dimitrovgrad wouldn’t be able to deal with all the challenges.
Owing to ASB team and immediate reaction of the donor, ASB was able to allocate, through the funds provided by the EU, German Federal Foreign Office and Aktion Deutschland Hilft, 300,000 Euros for direct assistance to refugees and local public services. New refugee transit centre capacity of 70 beds, with three residential blocks and one administrative centre is being constructed. Centre will be completely furnished and equipped with all necessary appliances and will be ready to welcome refugees by the end of October.
Apart from the infrastructure works, ASB allocated significant funds for direct assistance to refugees. Over the past year ASB distributed food, water, clothes and hygiene necessities to refugees in need and will continue to do so in the future. Through all this time organization ASB had municipality of Dimitrovgrad as reliable partner without whose assistance construction of new centre and other ASB activities wouldn’t be possible.
