Making public services accessible for all in Mitrovica
ASB South East Europe continues to support more inclusive and accessible communities across the Western Balkans through the regional EMPOWERED project, connecting local governments, civil society organizations, and communities in creating concrete solutions for persons with disabilities.
As part of these efforts, a new lift for persons with disabilities has been installed in the municipal building in Mitrovica, significantly improving access to public services and making one of the city’s key public institutions more accessible for everyone.
Implemented in cooperation with PREDA Plus Foundation and supported by the Municipality of Mitrovica, this initiative represents an important local step toward removing everyday barriers that persons with disabilities continue to face in many communities across the region.

Accessibility is not only about infrastructure — it is about equal participation, dignity, and the ability of every person to independently access institutions, services, and opportunities within their community. For many persons with disabilities, inaccessible public buildings still remain one of the main barriers to inclusion in daily life. The installation of the lift is the result of continuous cooperation between civil society organizations, local authorities, and community stakeholders working together to identify practical and sustainable solutions based on real needs.
Through the EMPOWERED project, ASB South East Europe supports local partners across the Western Balkans in strengthening inclusion through infrastructure improvements, advocacy activities, local inclusion initiatives, psychosocial support, career counselling, and the development of more accessible local policies and services.
The new lift in Mitrovica is another example of how regional cooperation and local partnerships can create visible and lasting changes for persons with disabilities and their families — turning inclusion from a principle into everyday practice.
